When confronted with the idea of intimacy, many of us stop short. We balk at the notion of discussing such an uncomfortable, sensitive subject, even within the relative safety of the Al-Anon program. It is not a terribly common topic for a meeting, so unless we’re participating in a Fourth Step study or attending a workshop, we may never have considered speaking about intimacy in a group setting. Even the thought of sharing one-on-one with a Sponsor or another trusted Al-Anon friend may give us pause.
And yet, the need is there. Many of us feel like we are outsiders, permanently separated from everyone in our lives, even from our fellow Al-Anon members. We yearn to connect with other human beings, but have no idea how to do it. Discovering how to form and maintain intimate relationships in every aspect of our lives is crucial to our recovery.
