RUCE SINCLAIR is director for the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology in the University of Toronto. He is the author of Philadelphia's Philosopher Mechanics: A History of the Franklin Institute 1824-1865, which won the Dexter Prize in 1975 for the best book in the history of technology.
