The genre of the comic novel, which includes Charles Sorel'sHistoire comique de Francion, Paul Scarron'sRoman comiqueand Antoine FuretièresRoman bourgeois, was extremely popular in 17th century France. The present study examines the relations between individuality and comedy in these novels, and thus casts new light on the early history of the novel and of the modern individual.
