In languages with articles such as German, noun phrases are usually determined by the articles. The individual variable positions of the DPs act to further specify this determination. Slavic languages without articles do not represent determination at the sentence level. Determination is specified conceptually at the utterance level only by verb aspect and a variable word order. However, the specified determination of noun phrases is a precondition for textual coherence in both languages.
