Over the course of the 19th century, verification of sources became a basic principle of historical research. Daniela Saxer shows how historians began to apply new techniques, such as regesting, editing, and photography. In addition, historians changed their attitude toward sources and adopted a perspective of objectivity. Dissemination of this new self-concept led to the professionalization of the science of history.
