| In 2013 The Cherwell School completed its first fifty years. Such an anniversary is worth noting but this Cherwell birthday is a real cause for celebration considering how much has been achieved over a half century by pupils, staff and governors, supported by parents and friends. In its first few years The Cherwell School was among the smallest secondary schools in Oxford, and was without much of a reputation. By 2013 it had grown more than fourfold and had spread across the Marston Ferry Road to become the largest school in the city.More importantly, it had gained a national reputation for its quality, and year after year had many more pupils applying for entry than it could accommodate. This book explains how this remarkable change came about and to describe some of the key events and personalities of these times. It is hoped that the text and illustrations will bring back memories to pupils, staff, and to all those who have contributed to the first fifty years of The Cherwell School.Martin Roberts' main hobby when head teacher of The Cherwell School was writing History textbooks and he has also written a history of Peers School, Littlemore. Most of the illustrations are the work of past and present pupils and staff. |
