Perceptive and well-written adaptation of Boccaccio's masterpiece, The Decameron. Superb reading for student and layman alike.

71. A Wife`s Loan (p. 172)

Gulfard was a German officer in the payroll of the state in Milan. A stout and loyal fellow, his credit rating was excellent, for he repaid each loan he received. During his stay in the city, he fell in love with the wife of a rich merchant and in a discreet way let her know his feelings. The lady sent him word that she would please him, provided that he satisfy her need of two hundred florins and keep their affair an absolute secret.

Gulfard despised her sordid covetousness, but let her know that he would do everything in his power to please her. Nobody would know anything except a trusted friend of his, who always kept him company.

One day the lady informed Gulfard that her husband was to leave town in a day or two. Gulfard went to him before he left and took a loan for two hundred florins. The rich merchant left town, and the German officer, taking his friend along, went to deliver the two hundred florins to the lady."Madame," he told her in his friend`s presence,"take this money and give it to your husband on his return."

"Gladly," answered the lady, thinking that he had said this to cover up his real purpose before the friend. She counted the money and was happy. Then she obliged Gulfard every night until her husband returned.

Later, when Gulfard spied the merchant with his wife, he went with his friend to their house. At the proper moment he said before everybody,"Sir, I had no use for the two hundred florins you loaned me. Therefore, I returned them to your wife during your absence. Please cancel my debt."

The merchant asked his wife if she had received the money, and she could not deny it in front of the other witness. Therefore, she gave her husband the price of her baseness, and Gulfard had the last laugh in this sordid affair.

72. The Sexual Urge of a Priest

The pastor of Varlungo, a little village near Florence, was a lusty man who always tried to please the ladies in his parish. Among them, Belcolore, the wife of a farmer, was most to his liking. A jolly young woman, she was as apt at turning the mill as any woman alive. She could play tabor, lead the dance around, and sing. He tried all means to attract her attention, but she ignored him, even though he kept sending gifts from his garden.

One day, the priest saw Belcolore`s husband leave the village on some business. Immediately, he ran to see her and started to complain about her harshness.

"What am I doing?" she asked with a mocking laugh."You don`t do anything. Nor do you let me do anything. That`s what is wrong," answered the pastor.

"Come on, now. Do priests do such things?""Better than others," replied he."And I`ll tell you why. We grind seasonal, not steady harvests."
