IT’S AT THE ROOT

For you to understand the way you are as an adult, you have to dig deep into the past. Not onlyyour childhood and upbringing, but your parent’s childhood, upbringing, and even what occurred during their adulthood years. It is not only our physical features that go back generations, it is also our characteristics, mannerisms, and even habits. We as humans are not only programmed genetically, but also environmentally. Not only do we get similar looks passed down from our parents, grandparents, and ancestors, but our subconscious minds are very much programmed to run the same course as well. Which is why oftentimes addiction runs through generations of families. You may or may not have heard the term “generational curse” before. Abuse may run through generations of families. Also, infidelity, stealing, and poverty, could run through generations of families. On the positive side, you see hard working traits through generations who understand the importance of saving, healthy marriages, faithfulness, proper parenting, etc. Ultimately, it is up to each generation to break as many of the so-called, “generational curses” as much as possible and maintain the positive traits.

The only thing is, we are not taught how to do that or even taught that it is possible to do. We are just programmed from birth to carry on as our predecessors did.. It is said that our infant years, from birth to age 3, are the most important years for learning. Which is why a child can come into a multilingual family and grow up speaking multiple languages. Even though we don’t think someone is affected by what they witness in their infant years, it is actually starting them off on whatever path of life you choose. As we get older, we are still not taught to break any of these subconscious programs. We watch our parent’s tendencies, we mimic things we see on TV, we follow what our friends do...list goes on. The sad part is that the only way to gain knowledge on the issue is through reading books. And this is something we have to find out on our own. There is a quote that reads, “If you want to hide something from black people, put it in a book.”

We usually don’t go searching for these types of answers until something drastic happens in our life that forces us to go searching. I feel like it should be mandatory to learn about these things in school. While we learn about the history of our country, we need to learn the history of our own self. Get an early grip on the things we have been programmed to learn, and what we can do to shift the paradigm early to save the outcome of our future. We as young men need to be taught the importance of faithfulness and how this one disciplined act can set the tone for discipline in every other area of our lives. We need to be taught that w
